Prashant Modi: First Natural Gas Pipeline of this kind in India

Prashant Modi is the president of Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEECL). He oversees the day-to-day running of the company, and is involved in promoting the business. Prashant Modi graduated from Boston University, with a BSc in Business Administration. He majored in Finance, and his keen interest in new business ventures, led him to attended classes at Harvard Business School. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, have an Environmental Task Force Committee. Prashant Modi is a member of this committee.

The First Energy Provider to Extract and Distribute CBM

GEECL is the first energy provider in India to extract and distribute Coal Bed Methane (CBM) for use as energy. Initially, the goal was to explore new ways of providing energy, to an ever growing economy. Environment concerns, have led companies to consider more ecologically viable forms of energy. CBM is providing a cleaner alternative to conventional Natural Gas.

Extraction and Distribution

Coal Bed Methane is extracted from coal-seams in the coal rich region of West Bengal. It is distributed to consumers via a gas supply line. CBM is 97 per cent Methane, and has none of the pollutants associated with Natural Gas usage. CBM therefore, offers a cleaner alternative to typical Natural Gas. Production methods took time to refine, and progress was slow at first. The operation began on a small scale in 2007. The pioneering corporation had to take time to learn and grow in this new area. Now there is a book detailing the entire production process. The first industrial businesses to be supplied with the gas in West Bengal were a glass factory, and a biscuit factory. From such small beginnings, the operation has grown from strength to strength over the years.

First Gas Pipeline of this kind in India

GEECL now owns the first pipeline for distributing CBM in West Bengal. The pipeline is 12” in diameter and transports gas from the well, to the collection station in Asanol. Locations, further away, such as: Kuti and Durgapur are supplied to the East and West. The pipeline forms part of the CMB distribution network.
